Professor Hamaguchi was the former lead scientist of Big Falcon until his death.
History[]
When La Gour warned the earth of an impending invasion, Hamaguchi was one of the few who believed him. Together they worked to create defenses for earth, one of which was the robot Voltes V.
Personality[]
Apart from guiding them in war, he functions as a sort of father figure to them, concerned about their wellbeing and being emotionally supportive when they needed it. He knew the Go brother's father and would often tell them about him. Despite having the appearance of an old man past his prime, Professor Hamaguchi is surprisingly very capable of defending himself; Boazanian soldiers who were trying to seize him during an abduction attempt failed when they were met with his vicious roundhouse kicks.
Voltes V[]
Hamaguchi debuted in the first episode, where he was introduced as a friend of Mitsuyo and Kentaro Go. He often gives the team instructions to defeat the beast fighters.
Zuhl comes up with a plan to imitate Kentaro's voice to fool the Go brothers into abandoning their positions in Voltes V. Heinel gives him his permission to do so and the plan commences.
At the same time, Professor Hamaguchi took the Go brothers to the edge of Falcon island to tell them about their father. He tells them he loved the earth and everything about it, and created Voltes V to protect it. As the waves crash, he tells them to never give up their struggle no matter how ugly the war gets.
Just then, Scar Rook appears, and Zuhl uses the voice imitator machine to tell the Go brothers to abandon earth. They are shocked, but refuse to give in to him. Realizing they won't budge, Zuhl attempts to capture them but only manages to get Hamaguchi. Inside Heinel's ship, Hamaguchi recognizes the voice imitator machine and realizes that he had been tricked. Zuhl calls him smart for recognizing it, and Jangal states that his plan is to hold Hamaguchi hostage in exchnage for the dismantling of Voltes V. However during the fight, Hamaguchi escapes and tells the Voltes team the truth, before dying.
Relationships[]
La Gour[]
La Gour and Hamaguchi were good friends, and he promised to look after his kids while he was in Boazania. La Gour also taught Hamaguchi about Boazan technology. When La Gour was presumed dead, Hamaguchi and Mitsuyo prepared according to how he asked. Hamaguchi would also often visit his grave and pay his repsects. Whenever he talked to the Go brothers about their father, he would speak of him as a honourable man who loved the earth and wanted to protect everything about it.
Ippei Mine[]
Ippei initially resented Hamaguchi for separating him and Eiffel and forcing him to be a pilot for the Voltes team. He expresses his anger at Hamaguchi several times over this, not knowing that Hamaguchi had secretly arranged for Eiffel to be returned to him due to his good performance as a cadet. When he is finally reunited with Eiffel, he tries to abandon the team. However when the Boazanians attack the earth and nearly kill Eiffel, Ippei then understands why Hamaguchi recruited him to the team and rejoins.
Professor Sakonji[]
Sakonji was Hamaguchi's protege.
In other media[]
According to Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection, Hamaguchi is Ippei's maternal grandfather. However, in the anime this is never mentioned and in the first episode Ippei states Hamaguchi kidnapped him.
It's not stated in the anime, but he was Mitsuyo's teacher in her college days.[1]
Trivia[]
- His name, Hamaguchi, is derived from Tadao Nagahama (the director of Voltes V) and Shoichi Taguchi (the screenplay writer for Voltes V).[2]
