History[]
Kozo Sakonji was a student of Hamaguchi, having been trained to take over his postion should Hamaguchi die. He was friends with Kentaro and Mitsuyo Goh.
Voltes V[]
Zuhl comes up with a plan to imitate Kentaro's voice to fool the Go brothers into abandoning their positions in Voltes V. Heinel gives him his permission to do so and the plan commences.
At the same time, Professor Hamaguchi took the Go brothers to the edge of Falcon island to tell them about their father. He tells them he loved the earth and everything about it, and created Voltes V to protect it. As the waves crash, he tells them to never give up their struggle no matter how ugly the war gets.
Just then, Scar Rook appears, and Zuhl uses the voice imitator machine to tell the Go brothers to abandon earth. They are shocked, but refuse to give in to him. Realizing they won't budge, Zuhl attempts to capture them but only manages to get Hamaguchi. Inside Heinel's ship, Hamaguchi recognizes the voice imitator machine and realizes that he had been tricked. Zuhl calls him smart for recognizing it, and Jangal states that his plan is to hold Hamaguchi hostage in exchnage for the dismantling of Voltes V. However during the fight, Hamaguchi escapes and tells the Voltes team the truth, before dying.
After Hamaguchi's death, General Oka would temporarily lead the Voltes team, but as noted by Heinel, he was an incompetent leader and could not manage both Big Falcon and the Japanese military at once. Thus, Professor Sakionji was sent and started making changes across Big Falcon to suit the battle. He also started giving the Voltes team a strategy, which was successful in defeating the beats fighter. After he helped them, General Oka introduced him to the Voltes team, saying he would take Hamaguchi's place as their guide. The Voltes team approved.
However, tensions would rise due to his style being radically different than Hamaguchi's. He would push the Voltes team past their previous limits and out Hiyoshi's life at risk by ordering him to fly at a speed too fast for him. When the Voltes team didn't produce his desired results, he ordered their personal belongings to be taken away as he felt they were a distraction to their mission to save earth. When Kenichi saw his medal being thrown away (that he had won at a sharpshooting competition), he grew enraged, took his Volt machine, and announced he was going to recruit General Oka to be his leader again, to the agreement of the Voltes team. They flew away, despite Sakonji yelling at them over the radio to stay. However a beast fighter attacked, and the Voltes team came under it's clutches. Sakonji then gave orders on how o free themselves.Though they had initally sworn to never obey Sakonji's orders, Sakonji stated that he would never force the team to do anything that was too risky for them and he promised that he cared for their safety. The Voltes team then decided to listen to his instructions and successfully defeated the beast fighter.
In future episodes, Sakonji showed more respect to the Voltes team, and in return the Voltes team showed more improvement in their battles. Despite their rocky start, they grew to respect Sakonji and his authority.
